How little could you thrive on if…

So the whole question is how little could you live on comfortably if you had no rent or house payment (owned your home) no car payment grew a garden?

Add the idea that you could walk, ride a bike or take the bus some or most of the time to work and shop.

Could you save money?

Be sure to count in power, insurance and food you would buy as well as entertainment. Also allow for clothing, hair cuts and medical. Would you be able to thrive on say $25 k or $30k per year? Oh don’t forget phone and Internet and cable TV if you use them.

Could you grow a significant amount of food in your backyard garden to take a bite (pun intended) out of your grocery bill?

My thinking is yes if the major costs in life are taken care of there is time and money for living a great and comfortable lifestyle.

Living in the right community would be a key consideration in this life as it would foster it. Like minded people could share resources and help each other thrive regardless of the economy. Clothing food transportation and other things like tools and child care could be shared or bartered.

Just curious as to what the perspective is out there thoughts and ideas you might share with everyone.

Thanks in advance.

Kevin

  1. I currently rent, and don’t plan to change, until this summer I owned a car, and I just this year started a garden. I currently live on a fraction of the income you suggested and have nothing that I want and couldn’t have. If I had no rent (but had utility bills) I could probably live easily on less than $5,000

  2. Without a mortgage or rent, I could easily live off $6,000 a year. And live well, actually. It helps that I enjoy cooking, so I prepare my mostly vegetarian meals from scratch.

That said, it would be more realistic for me to budget $10,000 so I could have some luxuries, like the occasional night out. Plus I like having my car, which costs about $1800 a year in insurance, gas, parking and maintenance to run (I bought it used and paid cash, so I only having running expenses to deal with).

    1. Yep, let’s face it, most people need more money because they have a mortgage, car payment, credit cards, health insurance, and many places, property taxes are through the roof!

For me, health insurance is the real kicker…I can’t afford it, period so I make sure I take good care of myself and use alternative remedies when I am under the weather. (63) Our property taxes actually went down this year but were cheap, anyway. Truck is paid for, home/land paid for…no credit cards. If you can conquer your debt you are on the way…it’s a start.

People just have to get over this “materialistic attitude”…”things” don’t make one happy. A loving family, good friends, faith, a passion for something you love to do, whether it be gardening, art, a hobby that doesn’t break the bank…these are the things that will make life worth living, not McMansions, new cars, latest fashion, etc. If this is what you need to be happy then you need to take a good hard look in the mirror.

  3. ,Hi Kevin, I live on $12,000 a year now, I could live on $20,000 I live with my son & .familly. My son is Native American , Im white. We live on the reservation. because it is federal land There are no permits, or inspections.

  4. I always figured I could get by on a minimum wage job comfortably if I didn’t have a house payment, electricity payment and about $50 for groceries after my garden fed me and another. I see it as completely possible and want to try this life out in New Mexico.

  5. Funny, Kevin Sir, friends of mine and I really wanted this many years ago–a sort of a ‘commune’ type of lifestyle. Everyone living dose paying for one big portion of land and sharing in the fruits of that land, especially us Single Parent Families exchanging babysitting for a drive from a person with a car, etc…our vision didn’t come to reality but, we exchanged many wonderful experiences while we were close. We learned MUCH and forum new a
Appreciation and respect for each others Cultures, religions, traditions and children especially. Myself am a reformed City gIrl, enjoying my new found Small Town dream life (needs MUCH work but..;) ) I lived 12 years 2 kids, no cable and am still thriving under $25K/yr…somedays I wish my life were luxurious but MOST…I’m SimplyHappy

  6. We would love to find like minded communities, we are just starting this journey and don’t know where to look. We have been readying our house for market and have two remote locations we could build. We would just be alone though 🙂 One step at a time..

  7. I currently live on approx 1K a month. However, I think I spend too much, I am constantly trying to find ways to reduce my expenses. The first way would be to replace my (paid off) vehicle with a version that gets better gas mileage. Walking / biking to work are not options where I live.

  8. Geez Kevin! My husband and I live on $8400 per year now and still have a mortgage to pay. We’re comfortable but frugal. I wouldn’t know what to do with 25 or 30K…especially with no mortgage. Of course it’d be fun to find out!

  9. This is something I’m hoping to find out too!
I’m currently saving up for my tiny house build that starts next spring and then am hoping to find a cheap piece of land to set up a homestead. I’ll more than likely have to take out a loan to buy land, but it’ll be so much less than the average house these days.
I love the idea of growing your own food. It makes so much sense, financially, ecologically and taste wise.
Thanks for the thought provoking post!

    1. Leah here you go starting a program to understand the in’s and out’s of finding the right property for you. This is a four week telecourse covering where to start, what to look for and avoid when searching for a place for your home. What questions should you ask and who do you ask? What pitfalls to avoid that could cost you thou$and$ of unexpected dollars and derail your project after you already purchased. How to find out every thing up front before you buy so you can make sure you found the right place for you.

I have been down this road many times both personally and profesionaly with clients and the last thing you want is the wrong piece of property where you can’t do what you set out to do. You will learn how to get all the hidden questions about property development answered. This is a small investment of $97 for a full four week course one hour every tues with Q and A sessions after each call.

You will also get a planning kit with systems to organize your project. This is a universal system that works any where you live. The first ten people to sign up by Sun at 5pm get a bonus call with me a special private coaching session.

The program will start in two weeks on Tue Nov 6th at 3pm pacfic time one hour sessions. The sessions will be recorded so if your late or miss one you can play them later. Shipping is free for your kit in the US. Outside the US shipping charges will apply.

Send me an email to kevin@mobile-clean.com and I will send you a registration sheet.

  10. Hi, we have 160 acre-trailer-well-off grid-cattle-ponds-fish-quail,duck,,deer ,elk,pig,turkeys,rabits-grow food can and dehydrate everything.Property tax is less then 200 a year-we are in a ag/open space preserve-tax won’t go up. We do have a morgage of $650.00 a month.once that is gone. in a few years-We could live on a fraction of 25,000.00. –$200 a month would do it. My advice whe you are buying property-RESEARCH ALL PROPERTIES IN THE VACINITY AND FIND OUT WHO YOUR NEIGHBORS ARE-CHECK THEIR CRIMINAL RECORDS/WHAT KIND OF ANIMALS THEY HAVE. WATCH THE PROPERTY AND NEIBORHOOD FOR AT LEAST A FEW WEEKS. iF POSSIBLE STAY OVER NIGHT AND OBSERVE ON WEEKENDS AND WEEK DAYS.SLEEP IN YOUR CAR IF YOU NEED TO. yOU WOULD BE SURPRISED WHAT YOU WILL LEARN. WATCH FOR SIGHNS OF POSSIBLE MARIJUANA FARMS-iN CALIFORNIA MEDICAL MARIJUANA FARMS ARE LICENSED AND LEAGAL BY STATE LAWS.-BUT DO YOU WANT TO LIVE NEAR ONE-WHO KNOWS MAYBE THATS NOT A BAD ISSUE FOR YOU. THERE ARE MEATH LABS-MOST OF THIS ACTIVITY WOULD BE NOTICABLE NIGHTTIME, IT IS NOT UNCOMMON TO FIND THINGS LIKE DOG fIGHTING
FACILITIES-COCK FIGHTING-ILLEAGAL GAMBLING.-YOU WOULD BE SURPRISED WHAT A LITTLE FARM HOUSE ON THE NEXT PROPERTY CAN TURN INTO A FEW TIMES A MONTH OR SO-BIG LOUD OUTDOOR BOMBFIRE GET TOGETHERS. fUN TO ATTEND BUT NOT TO HEAR EVERY WEEKEND.WATCH FOR HUNT CLUBS-yOU DON’T WANT PROPERTY ADJACENT TO EITHER. IT CAN BE A GOOD THING OR A REALLY BAD THING TO OWN PROPERTY THAT IS aDJACENT TO (BLM) LAND-BEURO OF LAND MANAGEMENT-tHIS IS gOVERNMENT OWNED LAND-SOME OF IT JUST SITS THEIR-WHICH IS GOOD -BUT SOME OF IT CAN BE USED FOR DIFFERENT AND SURPRISING USES. COULD YOU IMAGINE BUYING SOME RURAL LAND AND GOING FOR A WALK-YOU COME TO SOME OLD FENCING-THE NO TRESSPASSING SIGNS LOOK LIKE THEY HAVE BEEN THERE FOREVER OR HAVE FALLEN ON THE GROUND. YOU SEE A SMALL STREAM-LOOKS INTERESTING-YOU DON’T SEE ANYHOMES OR ANYTHING SO YOU GO DOWN TO THE STREAM-ONCE THERE JUST OVER A MOUND THERE ARE VARIEOUS VEHICLE -SOME OLD SOME NEW-THERE ARE SOME STORAGE BUILDINGS-BAGS OF WHAT LOOKS LIKE TRASH PILED UP. YOU GO LOOK INTO ONE OF THE CARS-ITS AN OLD MUSCLE CAR AND YOU WONDER IF THE OWNER WOULD SELL IT CHEEP-yOU ALWAYS WANTED A PROJECT CAR. wHEN YOU GET CLOSER YOU SEE WHAT YOU THINK IS MANQINS THAT SOMEONE HAS PUT THERE TO BE FUNNY-YOU REALIZED ITS A COUPLE OF DEAD GUYES-OR MAYBE ITS MOVIE PROPS-YOU HOPE-BUT YOUR SURE IT IS DEAD GUYES AND THEY HAVE BEEN THERE A LONG TIME-YOU THEN GET SCARED BUT DECIDE TO CHECK ANOTHER VEHICLE-THIS ONE IS ONLY A FEW YEARS OLD -YOU NOTICE FLIES COMING OUT A BACK WINDOW AND A AWFULL SMELL-YEP THERE IS A DEAD LADY IN THE BACK SEAT-SHE DEFFINATELY HAS NOT BEEN THERE THAT LONG. YOU SCREAM AT YOUR HUSBAND TO GO BE HE JUST HAS TO CHECH OUT A SHED-YEP MORE DEAD PEOPLE! YOU FREAK-RUN-AND RUN FAST. WHAT DO YOU DO-YOU JUST BOUGHT THE PROPERTY NEXT DOOR-SHOULD YOU JUST SELL THE PROPERTY CHEEP AND NEVER MENTION IT -YOUR THINKING IT WAS MY LIFE SAVINGS NOBODY WILL BUY THIS PROPERTY IF THEY KNOW ALL THESE PEOPLE WERE KILLED JUST OVER THE SMALL HILL. WELL YOU KNOW WHAT I DID-I WOKE UP! IT WAS A NIGHTMARE I HAD IT THE DAY ESCROW CLOSED ON OUR PROPERTY. I HAD WATCHED A SEGMENT ON EITHER DISCOVERY OR 20/20 ON STRANGE JOBS PEOPLE HAVE. PART OF IT WAS ABOUT THESE SCIENTIST/ PLACE THESE DEAD PEOPLE IN ALL KINDS OF SITUATIONS TO WATCH DECOMPOSITION-IT IS INFO ESSENTIAL TO CSI INVESTIGATION. CREEPY!-WHY DID I TELL YOU THIS-YOUR LAND IS SUCH A BIG INVESTMENT AND NOT KNOWING EVERYTHING ABOUT IT AND THE SUROUDING PROPERTIES CAN DESTROY YOUR DREAM AND FUTURE. —DO NOT BUY ANY PROPERTY THAT IS ENTERED TROUGH AN EASEMENT OR HAS ONE TROUGH IT, JUST DON’T IS ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW. JUST BECAUSE THE EASEMENT IS LEAGALLY RECORDED AND METIONED IN TITLE INSURENCE REALLY DOES NOT MEAN MUCH. THEY CAN BE CHALENGED AS ONE OF OURS WAS-iTG ENDED COSTING US MORE THEN THAT PROPERTY COST JUST TO END UP WITH THE EASEMENT THAT WAS OURS IN THE FIRST PLACE-$150,000 DOLLARS AND 10 YEARS LATER.. FOR TITTLE INSURENCE TO DEFEND A EASEMENT IT HAS TO BE SURVEYED AND ROAD DESIGHNED BY A CIVIL ENGINER-ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES COMPLETED AND PRELIMINARY GRADING PERMIT ON FILE WITH THE COUNTY AND A BOND PLACED WITH THE COUNTY TO MAKE SURE THE ROAD IS COMPLETED OR BROUGHT UP TO STANDARDS BEFORE USE OF EVEN AN EXISTING ROAD ON THE EASEMENT.jUST DON’T TOUCH PROPERTY THAT HAS ONE OR HAS ONE ATTACHED TO IT. THEY ARE EVIL. tHEY ARE SO MANY STORIES i CAN TELL YOU ABOUT AND GIVE ADVICE ABOUT LAND ISSUES. i AM JUST A MOM BUT I Have been trough it all with our properties that i have been asked tp be project managers for construction companies because i have delt with issues they have never thought about. things like stream crossings when it deals with multijuristiction-(Waters of the US,Fish and Game, Army Corp of Engineers, senic State route issues, relocation of owl nests-endagered species, wetlands, burn permits, cutting of wood for sale or personal use-(OAKS).)site distance-strange variences-and I mean strange-the list goes on. I can give alot of info on these issues. I have become and expert by necessity. TL-California
